Assessment of existing professional skills

How we establish professional competence

A structured process gives employers a clear account of what was assessed, which evidence was considered and how the decision was reached.

Three assessment stages

Assessment covers the relevant programme outcomes. The assessor selects and adapts assignments to the candidate and checks performance across the required areas.

  1. 1

    Theory and safety

Professional knowledge, safety awareness and the reasoning behind work decisions are checked in the context of the programme.

  2. 2

    Practical assignment

The assessor observes relevant professional work and checks independence, safe execution and the quality of the result.

  3. 3

Review and an additional work scenario

Discussion and follow-up scenarios establish how the candidate checks their work, explains decisions and handles unfamiliar conditions.

Evidence behind the decision

The centre records the assessment scope, methods, observed performance, evidence and result. Previous work can support the assessment, but does not replace direct checking of the candidate’s competence.

Assignment versions and follow-up questions vary. Assessment considers the working process, independent decisions and the quality of the result, rather than a rehearsed response to one published task.

  • Safe preparation and work throughout the task
  • Independent execution and appropriate methods
  • Accuracy, quality and compliance with the brief
  • Checking, documentation and explanation of the result

The same evidence requirements, in any format

Remote assessment uses live video with the candidate, workspace and relevant work steps visible. The assessor checks identity, independent performance and the quality of the evidence. Recordings are made only if agreed in advance; submitted photos or videos alone are insufficient.

If the connection fails or the work cannot be checked reliably, that part is paused and rearranged online or in person. Work that needs physical inspection, specialist supervision or an unsuitable remote setup is assessed on site.

Before the assessment

Contact the centre with your profession and experience. An assessor agrees the outcomes to be assessed, tasks, assessment language, equipment, time, fees and format in advance, and confirms your identity at the session.

If an assessment stage is not passed

If a beneficiary fails any examination or assessment stage, they must complete the relevant course under an individual learning plan before reassessment. The centre determines the content and duration of the course from the identified gaps and agrees the schedule with the beneficiary. The certificate is issued only after the subsequent assessment confirms all required outcomes.

You may request an explanation or review of the result. The review procedure, individual course arrangements, reassessment conditions and any fees are explained before the assessment.
